Week 1: Interview With ByHarrison

Week 1: Interview With ByHarrison

I collaborated with ByHarrison on a whirlwind of questions ranging from getting to know him right through to his thoughts on social media and loads of other topics. A very interesting guy to say the least; to hear what he has been through to where he is now, is a MASSIVE encouragement for others to get the heck out of their comfort zones and go chase your dreams. Next topic will be released right here again, next Monday at 6:30pm (GMT).

Meet The Blogger

Tell us about yourself, who you are, what you do and what’s your story?

Wow, what a way to start… where do I even start? So my name is Harrison Beach. I’m from the UK, I’m 25 years old (wow I feel old) and I’m currently living in New Zealand. I gave up the 9-5 job back in October 2018 to travel the world, to find myself and to fulfil my dream of travel… and I haven’t looked back since. As of now, I’m part of the management team at a restaurant, I also run their social media. Whilst doing this, I work on my own social media and blog… www.byharrison.com (shameless plug). What’s my story? Well I really could go on forever, ey. At the age of 19 I came out as gay. My friends already knew but it was at 19 where I felt comfortable enough to come out to my family. This almost felt like the last huge stage in life for me. I had the successful job, I had a good friendship group, I was on my way to purchasing my first house and this was the list life thing I had to tick off. I put my dream of travelling to rest, in order to get myself a career and work my way up to buying a house. A few major life events happened, one of which being my Mum getting diagnosed with cancer, that really put life into perspective. It was these such events that made me quit everything and fulfil my true passion in life… travel. So far I’ve been to Bali and New Zealand, I’ve met some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met, I’ve experienced some of the most life changing things and as for now, I’m at a little bit of a crossroads in life. I’ve got to decide my next move, my next destination and my next plan… but I’m so excited for what’s to come.

How did you get into blogging?

When I was younger, I wanted to be a journalist. I’ve always loved writing, it’s been my one constant love throughout life. I’ve always been very creative and getting a job in banking, was probably the least creative thing I could’ve done. So I needed somewhere to exercise my creativity. That’s where the blog had come about. I feel I got into blogging in the days where It was still a relatively new thing. Not many people had jumped on the bandwagon and for me, it was my corner of the internet that nobody knew about. I had a few regular readers but none of my friends or family even knew about it. It was my own little space where I could take photo’s, write about what I was loving and have a little outlet for my creativity. And in finding this new love, ByHarrison was born.

What is your greatest achievement so far and what do you hope to achieve in the future?

So far, my greatest achievement is living the life I love. Having the confidence to quit everything, leave my life behind, move half way around the world and set up a new life. A life I love, a completely different way of living compared to what I was used to and to grow so much as a person. Also, in having ByHarrison, I was lucky enough to get to go to Bali with 9 other incredible creatives, to work with some amazing hotel chains and create content for them and their social media. This past year of my life has been my greatest yet. In the future, well who knows what’s going to happen? Right now, I think I’d like to set up my own business, become my own boss and be completely independent. Life freely and love life. There’s a few things in the pipeline right now but soon enough, I hope to put a big tick in the self-employed box on my bucket list.

What does an average day look like for you?

It really depends how much I’ve been working at the restaurant. But usually it’ll go something along the lines of waking up at around 9:00am… I know that’s late for a lot of people, but I work really late into the night/early hours of the morning so I kind of need my sleep. So I’ll wake up, shower and get ready for the day. I’ll create a To-Do list (I’m a huge fan of lists) and get down on paper, everything I need to do that day. I’ll check through social media & emails and then go about my to-do list. Usually that list consists of writing blog post, reaching out to brands, editing pictures, taking pictures and then comes the boring ‘home stuff’. Washing, cleaning ironing etc. And then if I have work that evening, it’ll be time to get ready and head into the restaurant. My days are consistently busy, I have hardly any time to ‘relax’ and I’m forever working on my hustle. But you know, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love what I do and I’m determined to turn my passion into a business. With hard work comes great reward.

What does the future hold for you?

Come October I have to leave New Zealand. My work visa runs out and I’ve decided to continue travelling the world. I’ll be making my way to Australia, hopefully back to Bali for a while and then heading back home to the UK for Christmas. I’ll then be going back to Australia in the New Year on a work visa, where i’ll set up base there for a bit before possibly moving to Cape Town. Right now, travel is my number one priority, as well as working on my blog and business. The future is bright, I have no doubt about it and I’m excited to see what happens. I’m excited to meet new people, surround myself with positive, like-minded people and hopefully meet a few more people with creative minds and work together. It’s an exciting time over here at ByHarrison HQ!
